How we partnered with Microsoft to help the King County Vaccination Partnership track logistics for a Covid vaccination clinic that served over 93,000 patients

At a glance

When our clients at Microsoft needed help on the analytics dashboard they’d built for the Covid vaccination clinic on their campus, we stepped in to support them.

Customer challenge

When Covid-19 vaccines began rolling out in the greater Seattle region in early 2021, King County health officials reached out to the private sector to help them meet the overwhelming demand, creating the King County Vaccination Partnership. Our clients at Microsoft responded by offering their conference center to serve as a vaccination clinic. To help ensure maximum efficiency, they built a dashboard to track clinic logistics such as patient traffic flows, vaccine inventories, vaccination rates among key demographics, and more. Microsoft developers volunteered their time to build and support the dashboard while also maintaining their usual workloads.

About a month after opening, the clinic started seeing an exponential increase in patient flow. Organizers needed solutions for maximizing the number of weekly vaccinations while also ensuring fair distribution among demographics. At the same time, the team managing the analytics dashboard had been working long hours for several weeks and needed a break, so Microsoft asked Logic20/20 to step in and help.

Approach and solution

Given the urgency of the Partnership’s mission to vaccinate as many people as possible, as fast as possible, this initiative required us to hit the ground running and to iterate at a rapid pace. To meet ad-hoc reporting needs, we executed agile prototyping and implementation of Power BI dashboards, and to improve supportability, we streamlined existing reporting and data pipelines. By integrating Dynamics 365 data sources, we helped ensure that sensitive patient health information remained secure while still enabling high-level data insights. Finally, we developed Power Automate workflows to enable near-continuous data refresh schedules.

Despite the challenges presented by this unconventional project, our team was able to deliver on all counts ahead of schedule.

Value and benefits: “The Wins”

To date the Microsoft campus clinic has delivered over 170,000 vaccine doses to more than 93,000 patients, 53 percent of which went to people from at-risk communities. During its busiest week, more than 21,000 doses were administered. As a result of our support, public health officials had access to high-quality reporting via a fully automated dashboard, which led to improved vaccination efforts at the county level. We also made it easy for healthcare professionals to quickly identify and investigate outlier patterns, from appointment no-shows to reports of myocarditis, so that remedial action could be taken as quickly as possible.

By stepping in to support the clinic’s Covid vaccination dashboard, Logic20/20 helped King County Vaccination Partnership to deliver on its promise. While the initial urgency has passed, Microsoft continues to work with us in anticipation of a new wave of demand as youth vaccinations and booster shots begin to roll out.
